GERD Awareness

Sunday November 23, 2008
November 23 to November 29, 2008 has been designated as National GERD Awareness Week. GERD stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease, but you may know it more commonly as heartburn. In case you are thinking, "I have IBS, why is she talking about GERD?", be aware that a recent study found that a diagnosis of IBS increases your risk of being diagnosed with GERD and vice versa.

To learn more about GERD, check out About.com's Heartburn/GERD site, guided by Sharon Gillson. In particular, see her extremely informative article:

The IFFGD also has a GERD site, filled with information and resources. IFFGD has also made available a toll-free Heartburn Hotline. You are encouraged to call 1-888-964-2001 for a free GERD Awareness Week information packet.
