A fascinating article has just been published in the journal Nutrition & Metabolism on the role that gut inflammation may play in the onset and maintenance of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). According to the article, one of the factors behind this area of inquiry is the overlap between CFS and IBS. The article reviews research as to CFS and dysfunction in the areas of gut microbiota, the gut mucosal barrier, and the gut mucosal immune system. The authors recommend additional research in these areas so as to perhaps find treatments that target these areas of gut dysfunction.
I say, "Bring it on!" Any inquiry into the health or dysfunction of the gut is only going to result in a broader understanding of IBS as well as improved treatment of IBS options.
