Several years ago, I drastically changed my diet at the instruction of my holistic physician. Beans and lentils became a regular part of my daily food intake. I don't need to tell you the effect this had on my system - my poor husband almost needed to sleep in the guest room! With time and some probiotics, I am now able to eat my healthy foods without too much of a problem.
Beans are an obvious culprit in terms of producing intestinal gas, but they have plenty of company. It is helpful to know what it is about certain foods that contribute to gas and bloating so that you can make food choices that take into account what is going on in your life each day. My article, "Top Six Gassy Foods", lists the top offenders as well as an explanation as to why they are gas-producing. As you will see, many of the top gassy foods are foods that are very important for overall health. The challenge is to learn how and when to eat these foods so as to benefit from their nutritional value while at the same time allowing you to live your life comfortably. (And not kick anyone out of their own bedroom!)
