Dear Dr Bolen

I would like to thank you for your blog/website and the advice on it which has been a great help to me in dealing with IBS (which I have had for many years). Your advice has been sympathetic and helpful and a welcome change from the attitude of the UK medical profession whose latest contribution involved this statement: “the disorder represents a considerable financial burden to the health service, owing to medical consultations and the consumption of other valuable resources” (British Medical Journal, Sept 2012). Unbelievable! Now I know why I have never seen a GI specialist.

Thank you for not saying IBS is in my head, that I should just get on with it and stop wasting NHS resources as it’s not a real disease anyway and why don’t you just get over it etc.

Best wishes for 2013!
