Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) is a diagnosis given to individuals who have a healthy bowel and suffer from chronic constipation, but whose symptoms are not relieved through standard treatment.
CIC is differentiated from constipation predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C) by the lack of pain as a primary symptom. Like IBS, CIC is classified as a functional gastrointestinal disorder due to the lack of any overt sign of injury or disease.
