Definition: Functional abdominal pain (FAP) is a disorder in which a person experiences chronic abdominal pain for which there is no known cause or any visible physical injury or disease. FAP is distinguished from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) by that fact that there is no change in the appearance or frequency of bowel movements (such as diarrhea or constipation).
