Definition:

Tricylic antidepressants are a class of antidepressants that affect certain neurotransmitters in the nervous system resulting in changes in mood and other physical symptoms. Tricyclic antidepressants are prescribed to treat a variety of physical disorders, including depression, anxiety and pain.

Tricyclic antidepressants are sometimes used as a treatment for IBS due to their beneficial effects on symptoms.
