Don’t be deceived by the size of this slim, tiny book. I Have IBS…Now What?!!!, by Ashkan Farhadi, MD, packs a powerful punch in terms of educating patients about irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Using a question and answer format, and a relaxed, casual writing style, Farhadi shares with the reader the information that he obviously routinely offers to his IBS patients. Within this simple framework, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the disorder, including such topics as symptoms, current research, diagnosis and treatment.

About the Author

Ashkan Farhadi, MD is a gastroenterologist in the section of gastroenterology and nutrition at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Farhadi treats patients who suffer from IBS and other functional gastroenterological disorders, as well as celiac disease and the inflammatory bowel diseases. In addition to his clinical work, Farhadi is actively involved in gastroenterological research. In reading the book, one gets a clear sense of his competence and knowledge regarding IBS.

Strong Points

  • Easy to understand explanations of complex medical terms
  • Provides an excellent visual representation of the factors that contribute to symptoms
  • Includes the most current research
  • Offers a guideline for managing symptoms

Shortcomings

  • Coverage of medication options is brief and somewhat confusing
  • The book could use a thorough edit, as there are numerous spelling errors

Is This Book for You?

In my opinion, anyone who suffers from IBS could benefit from reading this book. Farhadi succeeds in his intention to give readers the tools they need to become effective participants in their own medical care. His clear explanation of the complex relationship among food, stress and symptoms will certainly help the IBS sufferer feel an improved sense of confidence in working toward breaking through the cycle that results in symptom exacerbation. In addition, his simple overview of cutting-edge research provides the sufferer with a foundation for understanding the benefits of new treatment options as they become available. Reading this book will significantly increase your knowledge about this complex disorder.
