The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) is an organization comprised of health care professionals who specialize in gastrointestinal (GI) diseases and disorders. According to the ACG web site, its mission is to
“advance the medical treatment and scientific study of gastrointestinal disorders”. This organization offers some impressive resources for IBS patients and health professionals.
ACG Activities:
The ACG accomplishes its mission through a wide variety of activities:
- Provides continuing medical education (CME) opportunities.
- Participates in setting health care policy.
- Publishes practive management guidelines.
- Supports research into GI disorders.
- Provides patient advocacy.
IBS Management Guidelines:
The ACG published its latest version of IBS Management Guidelines in the January 2009 issue of the American Journal of Gastroenterology. This position statement offers recommendations for the management of IBS based on an analysis of the latest clinical research.
The IBS Test:
The IBS Test is a free easy-to-use online tool allows an individual to determine if they are experiencing common IBS symptoms.
The IBS Treatment Matrix:
The IBS Treatment Matrix is another free, easy-to-navigate online tool. The tool provides a comprehensive list of available IBS treatment options. As your mouse hovers over each of the options, information is offered as to the effectiveness of that particular treatment. The tool asks you to select the treatment options that you have tried and gives you detailed information as to the research on each treatment. Your personal report then offers you information about other possible options. You are encouraged to print up your report and discuss the findings with your doctor.
