International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD)

Updated February 24, 2012

It is my mission that every individual whose life has been affected by a functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGD), such as IBS, will become aware of the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD) -- an extremely worthy organization. Started in 1991 by Nancy and William Norton, it has become an international powerhouse, promoting education, research and support for people with FGDs. It is simply astonishing that one organization could have such far-reaching effects.

Accomplishments:

  • Provides ongoing support of GI health-related research efforts
  • Advocates for funding of GI research through contact with various agencies, including the U.S. Congress, the FDA and the National Institutes of Health
  • Designated April as IBS Awareness Month and registered its listing on the U.S. National Health Observances calendar
  • Put together a board of directors, advisory board and editorial board that are each made up of many of the top experts in the area of GI health
  • Founder and facilitator of the biennial International Symposium on Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders

What it Does for the Public:

  • Provides assistance and referrals to individuals who suffer from FGDs through its website www.iffgd.org
  • Maintains websites on various GI conditions, including IBS, constipation, incontinence and GERD
  • Maintains an online learning center
  • Manages the web site I Am IBS, a site focused on providing support and advocacy for IBS

Benefits of Membership :

You don’t need to join IFFGD to benefit from its assistance. However, as the individual membership dues are $25 annually, it might be worth it to take advantage of these extras:
  • Subscription to Digestive Health Matters, a quarterly publication offering cutting-edge research and tips for living with an FGD
  • Ability to express your concerns to researchers, relevant government agencies, and medical and pharmaceutical companies
  • Increased access to IFFGD’s comprehensive library of brochures, fact sheets and articles
  • Timely information regarding clinical trials and available educational events
