The Mind-Body Digestive Center:

The Mind-Body Digestive Center, based in New York City, offers a holistic treatment approach to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The center consists of a unique combination of practitioners: a husband/wife gastroenterologist/psychologist team. The center was designed to treat patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders, with a particular emphasis on the treatment of IBS.

The two Drs. Gersons have distinguished careers in their area of expertise, along with their work at the center.

Charles D. Gerson, M.D.:

Dr. Charles D. Gerson is a gastroenterologist who serves as an attending physician at Mount Sinai Hospital and as a clinical professor of Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He has authored numerous research articles in the field of gastroenterology.

Mary-Joan Gerson, Ph.D.:

Dr. Mary-Joan Gerson is a Clinical Professor, Supervisor, and Director of the Advanced Specialization in Couple and Family Therapy at New York University's Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, as well as the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She has published numerous research papers in the areas of gastroenterology, family therapy, and psychoanalysis. She is the author of the book "The Embedded Self: An Integrative Psychodynamic and Systemic Perspective on Couple and Family Therapy".

The Treatment Approach:

The center provides patients with a comprehensive and holistic treatment approach. Patients have the option of both gastroenterological and psychology consults, as well as gut-directed group hypnotherapy, acupuncture, and nutritional counseling. Testing for lactose intolerance and small intestine bacteria overgrowth (SIBO) are available as well. The relationship between the mind and the body is emphasized throughout the center, with attention given to family dynamics, intimate relationships, and life stressors as they relate to the patient's management of their IBS.

The Bottom Line:

In a world where IBS patients frequently fall in the cracks, the unique nature of the Mind-Body Digestive Center offers a refreshing change. Its one-stop shopping approach provides the patient with treatment that is coordinated and tailored to the specific needs of the individual. If you live anywhere near the New York City metropolitan area and are looking for a comprehensive plan in terms of improved management of your IBS, I highly recommend the Mind-Body Digestive Center.
