Most of you have probably tried all sorts of things to bring about IBS relief. I am sure you would love to take just one pill and make it all go away! As of now, presciption medicine options for IBS are quite limited. Luckily, there are a number of new medications undergoing clinical testing for FDA approval. The big question is: "When will these drugs be available?"
Some insight into this very important timeline comes from stock market forecasts. A report published recently on PharmaTimesonline sheds some light. According to the report, sales of IBS drugs will "soar from a value of $610 million in 2010 to $2.7 billion by 2020." One of the hottest properties will be the drug, linaclotide (Constella in Europe), a medication designed to treat the symptoms of constipation predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C). A decision from the FDA on linaclotide is expected later this year. The report also stated there are mixed views as to how antibiotics for IBS will fare.
So the good news is that new drugs are coming. The bad news is that for many this might not be until the year 2020! That is a very long time off. Let's hope that the relevant regulatory agencies do their job well, but quickly!
